Luxury sedan buyers in India lay more epmhasis on the rear legspace and comfort since most of them prefer to hire a chauffeur for them. With this in mind, all the luxury sedans in India above INR 70 lakh are sold in the long wheelbase versions. Now, going a step further, Mercedes-Benz India is likely to launch the next-gen E-class sedan in India in its long wheelbase avatar. Till Conrad, chairman, Mercedes-Benz India confirmed such a model is being studied for India. “The LWB E-Class is an interesting product and we are evaluating possibilities for these kinds of products for India” he said.
The long wheelbase E-Class will be cater to the people who want more space and comfort than what the current model offers. The price for the current E-class starts at around INR 44 lakh and the S-class price in India is well above INR 1.20 crore. This gap will also be filled with the introduction of the long wheelbase E-class. Recently, Mercedes-India launched the V6 powered E350 CDI in India.
Mercedes currently manufactures and sells a long wheelbase variant of the E-class in China. This model is 14cm longer than the standard model and offers extra legroom for rear seat occupants. With the new-gen E-class, Mercedes will be the first to offer such a product in the segment.
