If you drive frequently during the night, you would know how irritating the high beam of oncoming vehicles can be. The intense beam of light blinds you for a few seconds and hampers focus and visibility drastically. Automobile manufacturers and suppliers have been constantly evolving and developing illumination setups to eliminate this problem. One such product innovator and supplier, Marelli recently won the 2020 Automotive News Pace Award for providing a glare-free high beam with high definition quality thanks to 1.3 million pixels. They have named this innovation h-Digi.

h-Digi is a product of Marelli Automotive Lighting and features digital micro-mirror technology (DMD), which has been used in an automotive lighting application for the first time. DMD has been available in simplified form in the consumer electronics sector for many years, however, it is a new optical component in the automotive field. It allows for better illumination and finer resolution as compared to other headlamps in the market, with the added ability to project on-road assistance and warning symbols for the driver.

h-Digi is the first lighting module in the market capable of using light as a communication tool. On-road image projections can include vehicle guidelines, weather warnings, speed limit changes, construction zone warnings, selective illumination of pedestrians, and crosswalk symbols. This high-resolution technology not only increases safety and comfort in human-driven vehicles, it will play a role in semi-autonomous and autonomous vehicle development. A more robust image projection is possible when leveraging vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) technology, increasing the types of messages conveyed.

“We are honored to be recognized with the 2020 Automotive News PACE award,” said Sylvain Dubois, EVP and CEO Marelli Automotive Lighting. “Our company is steeped in innovation; it’s in our DNA. It’s what fuels us to develop disruptive technology that increases driver safety and comfort. This award is a testament to the focus and dedication of our team members, valued partners and customers, and our unwavering commitment to reducing traffic accidents and fatalities.”

h- Digi module increases low beam and high beam range, adds intensity when high beam and adaptive driving beam functions are activated, and allows for extremely precise light output without glaring oncoming drivers.

Millennials Most Likely To Use Personal Transportation Post Lockdown – Laqshya Media Report

In a few hours, April 2020 could become an unusual month for the Indian auto industry. For the first time, not a single vehicle would’ve found an owner. It’s an unusual situation which has further compounded what was already a grim state for the industry. But the silver lining could become visible once the lockdown ends. A research study was conducted by the Laqshya Media Group and it has found some positives. It was conducted to help marketers figure out the perceptions, aspirations and anticipations of the Indian Millennial via-a-vis the ‘New Normal’ that the world faces today.

Ducati India Successfully Concluded Its First Independence Day Ride (6)

An online study was conducted, reaching 1104 respondents across the primary cities in India. The target group belonged to the age group between 18 and 39, across genders and representing both NCCS A and B. Summarizing all the reports and survey results has helped Laqshya assess the perceptions, aspirations and anticipations of the Indian millennials. The good news is that not only are the IMF and the RBI confident of India bouncing back – so are the Indian Millennials! The research talks about customer behaviour as per two primary age groups: 18-25 and 26-39. The analysis shows that each cohort responded differently to some of the questions posed to them, while they were statistically similar in response to others.

For example, one of the questions was whether people will wait to visit malls, restaurants or any public places right after the lockdown is lifted. 75% of the entire respondent base responded that they will be back within 4 to 5 weeks. The younger people, 18-25, shared that they will hit the malls in an average of 23 days while the 25-39 cohort’s average wait time was 29 days! But 31% of the targeted group are more likely to use personal travel more frequently as compared to earlier. Around 12% to 14% of respondents intend to buy a car or a two-wheeler over the next 12 months as assets. It is interesting to realize that people have different mindsets towards outings, investing and travelling.

BMW Deutsche Motoren Dealership (68)

Similar to the aforementioned question, a series of questions were asked to the people from different ages, genders, backgrounds and professions. Majority of people responded that they want to meet friends and family after the lockdown. It was noted that younger people and women had a major inclination towards eating out. The millennials are optimistically cautious especially in investing money or procuring assets. 53% of the respondents want to invest in fixed deposits, but more than 40% of them continue to have faith in mutual funds, and more than a quarter anticipate investing in the stock market.

The millennials also want to invest more in education and development of their skills, which will surely give a boost to the education sector. In the advertising world, print and outdoor media have taken a major hit as people during the lockdown had little option but to move to digital news portals and OTT platforms. Most of the population is binge-watching on all the major OTT platforms. Video calling apps have also gained great popularity thanks to official meetings and social hangouts being restricted to our laptop/mobile screen.

Will these trends stay after the lockdown ends? On that note, 36% of the respondents said that their online shopping will increase, and whopping 86% say that they will notice OOH advertising as much or more than they did before! References from the reports by The Reserve Bank of India, The International Monetary Fund and McKinsey & Company were also taken into account while making the report.

Atul Shrivastava, Group CEO, Laqshya Media Group believes that people in India are committed to fight and win over the current situation. He said, “There is a huge consumption of every product in India and there will be eagerness amongst the brands to become the first choice for every consumer. This is likely to fuel the demand for advertising sooner than most nay-sayers predict.”

Alok Jalan, Managing Director, Laqshya Media Group, is positive of the way ahead, “Although some industries have taken a major hit, others like the e-commerce businesses have a lot of scope ahead. This is also a good opportunity for traditional businesses to evolve their digital presence. If we are able to contain the pandemic shortly then there is a scope for the market to bounce back and show growth.”

Earlier this month, Honda Cars India had released a teaser image of the BS6 updated Jazz ahead of its launch on the official website. While it is pretty clear that India isn’t going to get the fourth-gen Honda Jazz anytime soon, buyers have to be content with what is just an emission update. On the other hand, the Euro-spec Honda Jazz gets something new in terms of safety equipment.

2020 Honda Jazz

The European version of the new e:HEV Jazz offers a new front centre airbag technology as standard. The newly introduced passive safety feature is just one element of a comprehensive package of safety features and driver aids for the new Jazz. The new front centre airbag is one of 10 in the new Jazz and helps to avoid direct contact and reduce the impact between a driver and a passenger in the event of a side-on collision. In order to ensure the airbag is accurately placed to deliver maximum protection during deployment, the airbag uses three attachment tethers which guide the airbag around the driver in a curve. To realise this new feature, the engineering team developed the airbag unit to fit within the upper bolster of the newly designed driver’s seat.

Further improvements for new Jazz include the rear seat i-side Airbag System. This unique double-structure airbag, installed in the rear seat pad, activates to protect rear occupants from impacts against the door and C-pillar in the event of side-on collisions. The airbag is also designed in compact size in order not to detract from the unique magic seat function of Jazz. These new advancements in occupant safety come as Euro NCAP, the European consumer protection organisation for vehicle safety, introduces new test requirements in 2020 in recognition of the severe effects of side-on collisions. The new assessments will expand the scope of investigations into side-on collisions from the far-side.

2020 Honda Jazz

For India, the BS6 Honda Jazz will be introduced in the coming days and as reported earlier, the interior is unlikely to be tingled with. The cabin is likely to remain similar to the current Jazz, albeit with some minor tweaks. Carryover features could include a front centre armrest, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cruise control, keyless entry with push-button start/stop, and rear parking sensors. The top-spec Jazz could offer some additional features like electrically adjustable and folding wing mirrors with indicators, automatic climate control and more.

It is likely to be powered by the same 1.2-litre petrol and the 1.5-litre diesel engines with a BS6 upgrade and identical performance figures. In its BS4 guise, the 1.2-litre petrol engine churned out 90PS/110Nm, whereas the diesel mill delivered 100PS/200Nm. Transmission duties are expected to be carried out by a 5-speed manual gearbox and an automatic for the petrol unit while the diesel could come mated to a 6-speed manual.

The big update, however, lies under the hood. As mentioned earlier at the AutoExpo, 2020, the Skoda Rapid will now be powered by a new BS6 compliant 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine that develops a generous 110PS of power and 175Nm of peak torque. For The First Time Ever, Maruti Suzuki Reports Zero Sales For An Entire Month

In what comes as disturbing, yet, expected news, Maruti Suzuki, the country’s largest carmaker reported that it had sold no cars in the country in April 2020. The lockdown initiated by the government as a measure to control the spread of COVID-19 has meant that production facilities have been shut throughout the month, as have dealerships. For the first time in history, the Indian automaker has not sold a single vehicle in the domestic market nor did it manufacture any vehicles for the entire month.

maruti_plant_ACI (1)

“Maruti Suzuki India Limited had zero sales in the domestic market, (including sales to OEM), in April 2020. This was because in compliance with the Government orders all production facilities were closed,” India’s largest carmaker said in a statement. Maruti, however, exported 632 units from Mundra port in Gujarat following the resumption of port operations. The company said the units were dispatched ensuring all safety guidelines.

The auto industry, given the nature of its business, has been one of the most heavily affected. But the first steps are being taken to return to some level of normalcy The auto major had last month got permission from the Gurugram district administration to restart its Manesar plant on a single shift basis while fixing the total number of employees at the plant at 4,696.

The company had then decided to resume operations only when it can maintain continuous production and sell vehicles. Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai plan on partially resuming production by May 2020. Further, the government is looking to lift the lockdown in a graded manner from May 3, with the designated Green Zones opening for business once again. This should mean that May will see more sales numbers. By following the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Maruti Suzuki will be allowed to manufacture 50 vehicles a day while operating with a limited workforce.

Other automakers are also expected to register the same for the time period with no manufacturing or sales taking place during the month. All auto manufacturers in India were forced to halt their production and sales temporarily due to the lockdown. Although many of them have come up with online sales platforms to circumvent the distancing measures, we expect these portals to still account for a limited portion of sales. Vehicles booked through these platforms can be delivered only when the lockdown is lifted.

India’s Only Hummer H1 Is Currently Being Upgraded In The U.S.

The Hummer H1, also fondly called the “Humvee”, is an SUV of monumental proportions. Originally designed only for military use, market demand led General Motors to sell some in the civilian space. Although no longer in production for commoners (wasn’t bought by commoners either), the ones which were lapped up, still leave dropped jaws in their wake around the world. In India, there are plenty of H2s and H3s, but unless there’s one hiding in secret somewhere, there’s only one H1. And it’s a proper, right-hand-drive example with a licence plate to match the identity.

The Mumbai-based black H1 was also a part of one of the editions of the Parx Rally and is now with Predator Inc., a company which was founded in the mid-1990s as an exclusive Hummer accessory manufacturer. Predator is now the go-to place for Hummers from all over the world which wish to be upgraded. The owner of the Indian Hummer H1 is a proper enthusiast and none of his rare and fancy machines is a garage Queen. The word around is that this black H1 undergoes a proper workout off the road from time to time and it has been upgraded with equipment which makes it a better machine than it was out of the box.

The owner’s enthusiasm is evident in the fact that he took the pains to switch the steering to the right side. This Hummer H1 also runs a 6.6-litre Duramax V8 turbo diesel engine which has been paired with an upgraded cooling system, a custom exhaust system which is better at heat dissipation, and a Predator-built Allison 6-speed transmission which can direct power to either all four wheels or just the rear axle. What this H1 also runs is a custom braking system, which makes use of a massive rotor, bitten into by a 6-piston caliper. It was designed by Predator for heavily armoured Hummers at the request of the Navy Seals forces. The standard braking system worked alright when the forces used the machines in Iraq but the same system wasn’t enough for the Humvees when they rolled down the treacherous terrain in Afghanistan. This H1 also runs air suspension which allows the ride height to be manipulated and inside, besides bringing the steering to the other side, the control had to be customised too for the differently-abled owner to pilot the vehicle comfortably.

Commenting on the initiative, Dr Partha Datta – President and Managing Director, FCA India said, “While a much-needed strategy is being put in place to restart economic activity by reopening various industries, large sections of the community are still displaced and are in need of basic necessities and proper medical treatment to survive the next couple of months. Our initiative is aimed at helping people tide over these difficult circumstances as critical steps are being taken to flatten the curve as quickly as possible. I am also incredibly proud that our employees have generously contributed a portion of their salary to help in the relief efforts.”

On the product front, FCA’s brand Jeep is said to working on a facelifted and another 7-seater version of the Compass SUV. Given the current situation delaying all plans, both could be introduced sometime next year. The Jeep Compass has been well-received in India and even after the arrival of newer competition, is still one of the most accomplished vehicles in its class. Offered in multiple variants, it might ask for a little more in terms of cost, but the package does justice to the extra price one pays.

Meanwhile, the Government of India has extended the lockdown till May 17,2020 citing the increase in the number of cases in the past few weeks. The entire country has been divided into three zones namely- Red, Orange and Green Zones, the Red Zone being the districts where the effect of infections is very high while the Green being the districts with a low infected population.

On the business front, Honda is about to launch the much-awaited, new-generation Honda City. The new Honda City was supposed to be launched in April but the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdown imposed nationwide has made the makers defer the launch. It is now likely to take place only when the lockdown is lifted. Other than that, Honda is also set to introduce the BS6 updated Jazz in the coming weeks.

Toyota Innova, since its introduction in our country, has been one of the most popular MPVs. Reasons are many, including the comfort, space and reliability which is synonymous with the Japanese car manufacturer. Over the years, the Innova has kept on getting better and they recently launched the BS6 compliant version of the same. Now, Toyota India has included a couple of more safety features in the Innova Crysta MPV as standard.

Innova Crysta

Toyota has now included safety features like Hill Start Assist (HSA) and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) as standard equipment for the BS6 Innova Crysta. Visually though, it remains exactly the same and the changes are only an addition to the MPV currently on sale. Other safety features remain exactly the same and the Innova Crysta continues to be one of the safest offerings in its class, offering driver, front passenger, and driver knee airbags, ABS, EBD with brake assist, reverse parking sensors, speed alert system, and three-point seat belts.

What makes the Crysta even more likeable is the fact that despite the new additions to the safety package, prices remain exactly the same as before. The BS6 Toyota Innova Crysta petrol range starts from ₹15.36 lakh and goes all the way to ₹21.34 lakh while the BS6 Crysta diesel model’s price ranges between ₹16.79 lakh and ₹23.02 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

With the BS6 compliant version of the Innova Crysta, Toyota discontinued the 2.8-litre diesel engine and carried on only with the 2.4-litre diesel unit to bring the costs down a bit. The turbocharged unit makes 150 PS and 360 Nm of peak torque when paired with a 6-speed auto and as many horses and 343 Nm when mated to a 5-speed manual. The 2.7-litre petrol engine makes 166 PS of power and 245 Nm of torque. Both engines are available with a five-speed manual gearbox as well as an option of six-speed automatic transmission.

COVID-19 Effect: Domestic Car Sales Crash To ZERO For April 2020

In light of the ongoing nationwide lockdown due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the country, automakers have, unsurprisingly, recorded zero sales in the month of April. In a first for the Indian automotive industry, automakers are reporting zero monthly domestic sales. Carmakers like Toyota and Mahindra noted that they sold no passenger vehicles in the country last month.

Hyundai Venue BS6 (1)

Earlier we had reported a similar story about the country’s largest car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki. Now other major manufacturers are coming up with the same domestic sales figure. Hyundai Motor India has come out with official sales numbers for the month of April 2020. However, with the imposed lockdown nationwide which forced Hyundai to suspend production and retail activities, the company’s domestic sales stood at zero units last month. However, due to the resumption of port operations, Hyundai was able to export 1,341 units in April 2020, surpassing Maruti Suzuki, which exported 632 units, to become the largest carmaker in India in terms of monthly numbers.

Adding to that, in April 2020, Hyundai’s exports fell by 92 percent, as compared to the 16,800 vehicles exported during the same month in 2019. Hyundai has confirmed that all the export shipping was conducted in accordance with the guidelines set by the government and export regulating authorities, ensuring adequate safety and protection for everyone.

Another major homegrown car and SUV manufacturer, Mahindra registered similar numbers. Mahindra & Mahindra noted that its domestic sales figure also stood at zero, for the first time, for the passenger vehicle segment. This is a direct result of the nationwide lockdown issued on March 25, to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, leading to the suspension of both vehicle production and sales in India for the entire month.

However, due to the resumption of port operations, the company was able to export 733 vehicles in April 2020. Although, Mahindra saw a decline of 65 percent in exports, as compared to the 2,118 units exported during the same month in 2019. The commercial vehicle segment also narrated the same story. The Light Commercial Vehicle(LCV) segment and the Medium and Heavy Commercial Vehicle Segment(MHCV) segment domestic sales figures also stood at zero.

Commenting on the situation, Veejay Nakra, Chief Executive Officer, Automotive Division, Mahindra & Mahindra said, “At Mahindra, we are working hand in hand with all stakeholders, especially our dealer and supplier partners, to get our ecosystem started, once the lockdown is lifted. The safety of all our employees will be of paramount importance to us while resuming our operations. We are hopeful that our dealerships will open soon and have stocks to cover the first few weeks of sale. In the export market, we have sold 733 vehicles during April”.

Another Japanese Indian joint venture, Toyota Kirloskar Motor(TKM) had to bear the same brunt. The company’s closure of dealerships and manufacturing operation of the automotive value chain has come to a grinding halt, it says in these critical times, it was aware that there would be no wholesales in the month of April 2020.

Naveen Soni, Senior Vice President, Sales & Services, Toyota Kirloskar Motor said, “COVID crisis exacerbated the already prevalent pressures on the automobile industry but the challenges this time are multi-dimensional. The lockdown was absolutely necessary and a timely step was taken by the Government to ensure the safety and well-being of people, however, the unavoidable side effect of this medicine has been the severe adverse impact on the economic activity.”

However, in the midst of the gloom, the company also shared some positive news. The company was happy to report that there has been some movement in the market as dealers are receiving some enquiries and the company will ensure that these customers are catered to as soon as we begin operations. To gain customer confidence provisions have been made to entirely digitalize the sales process which includes 360-degree product views for the customer to take a virtual tour of the vehicle, select financing options and receive a quotation online. The vehicle will be delivered to the customer’s doorstep once the purchase is completed.

Needless to say, the automobile industry has become one of the biggest casualties of the ongoing lockdown enforced by the Coronavirus pandemic. Even when the lockdown is lifted, carmakers are not hoping for a spike in vehicle sales because people will avoid flocking dealerships and will prefer online routes to buy new vehicles. Furthermore, even automobile production will also remain low initially because of a possible shortage of components.

Tata Sumo Rendered As A 6×6 Pick-Up Is Digital Badassery

The Tata Sumo is an iconic MUV that remained in production for more than two decades in the Indian market. It was discontinued in 2017 due to new norms. However, the Sumo remains one of the most recognised vehicles on the roads and there’s no doubt in the fact that it is a pure workhorse that can last for years without much requirement of maintenance. In a video that has surfaced online, a Tata Sumo has been digitally rendered to make it look like something else altogether. The final image is based on the regular Tata Sumo and it looks extremely good. The video showcases a Tata Sumo Gold being digitally modified to give it a new 6×6 drivetrain setup.

SRK designs make the Tata Sumo look butch, rugged and ‘badass’. In this setup, each of these axles is supposed to be powered by the engine and among the noticeable cosmetic changes rendered are, the front grille, headlamps and a new set of off-roading tyres. The front grille is replaced by an old school, straight-lined unit. The stock halogen headlamps are replaced by a new set of LED headlamps, there’s a winch mounted up front, the bumpers are carved to allow an extreme approach angle, and the wheel arches are more outwards and prominent than usual. Other than that, the big change, however, is that the cabin is a single row. The car also gets a set of halogen fog lamps on top of its chassis and a snorkel.

In the personal mobility space, pick-ups haven’t been all that popular and the ones which are available in the Indian market are more for the commercial vehicle segment, primarily used for transportation rather than personal use. These pick-up trucks carry a much more modest design and even though they have decent off-road capabilities, most don’t come with 4×4 or All Wheel Drive (AWD) options since they must be available at a certain budget. One aberration to this is the Isuzu D-Max, which is available for use as a personal vehicle and comes with a 4×4 drivetrain. There was the Xenon and the Scorpio Getaway too, but we know how many people bought them. This particular design though, makes the Sumo look much more muscular and if someone does pull off a mod job like this for real, will certainly attract a lot of eyeballs.

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt Ltd on Saturday has announced that it has exported 2,630 two-wheelers in April 2020. However, domestic sales of the Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer was zero due to the lockdown across the country that has been in effect since March 25.

Honda has suspended all four of its production facilities suspended operations from 22nd March till now in accordance with lockdown guidelines issued by the Government. Not just Honda, this is the case with all major auto manufacturers in the country. All the manufacturing plants and dealerships have been shut down in April 2020 due to the imposition of the nationwide lockdown.

Elaborating on how Honda is standing united with its business partners while preparing for the disruptive future, Mr. Yadvinder Singh Guleria, Director – Sales & Marketing, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. said, “Since suspending operations in this unprecedented crisis, Honda is taking strong measures for business continuity, safeguarding health & wellbeing of Staff, families & communities at large. We have eased the anxiety of our business partners and improved their cash-flows through quick liquidity infusion. Promoting #StayHomeStaySafe for our customers, we have already extended the Free service and Warranty period by another 2 months.”

Adding further to the discussion, he said, “Parallely as a responsible manufacturer, Honda is extensively recalibrating all its SOPs – not only within the company but the entire ecosystem; from the viewpoint of both personnel and workplace safety in COVID-19 era. At the same time, during the lockdown, we continue skilling-up HMSI and dealer staff with various e-learning modules. Preparations are on to resume operations after receiving respective approvals from Government while re-aligning with supply-chain constraints and evolving market sentiments.”

Needless to say, the automobile industry has become one of the biggest casualties of the ongoing lockdown enforced by the Coronavirus pandemic. The Government, however, is looking at avenues where it can start the business activities. Therefore, some manufacturing facilities outside the Red Zone have been given permission to carry out their operations in a limited manner with a limited workforce. Even when the lockdown is lifted, manufacturers are not hoping for a spike in vehicle sales because people will avoid flocking dealerships for the moment. Furthermore, even automobile production will also remain low initially because of a possible shortage of components.

On the business front, the TVS Motor Company has been in the news for acquiring a legendary motorcycle company recently. Britain’s Norton Motorcycles has been acquired in full by the Hosur-based manufacturer. Recently, TVS also appointed John Russell as the interim CEO of the British two-wheeler brand. John Russell isn’t a new name in the automobile industry as he has served as Vice-President and Managing Director for Harley-Davidson Europe from 1998 to 2007. Not only this but back in the day, he has also played the role of Managing Director of Land Rover’s commercial division.

TVS has also announced that they have no plans of moving production of Norton Motorcycles to India. They are looking forward to retaining the same design and assembly team despite the ownership being transferred to TVS. After the acquisition, Sudarshan Venu, joint managing director, TVS Motor Company, had commented, “Norton will continue to retain its distinctive identity with dedicated and specific business plans. TVS Motor will work closely with customers and employees in building the success and pre-eminence of the Norton Motorcycles brand and we look forward to growing together globally in the years to come.”
